Independence Day Mommy Merit Badges!

Parenting is hard. It's often a thankless job. But we're here to celebrate you! Come claim your ALL NEW Mommy Merit Badges from

I’m sure you’re gearing up for some Independence Day celebrations! I vividly remember the childhood excitement that comes with the Fourth of July… sliced watermelon, waving flags, and watching fireworks. Our Pinterest has been reminding us of all the great fun to be had this time of year — and the safety considerations that go along with it.

Instead of flooding you with more ideas (because there are already so many good ones out there!), I thought we could celebrate some of our own independence days as parents!

That’s right — I’m handing out more Mommy Merit Badges: Independence Day Edition! Have you achieved any of these milestones yet? If so, claim your badges below!

Independence Day Mommy Merit Badges

1. Freedom from Milk and DiapersGet your Freedom from Milk and Diapers Mommy Merit Badge!

We’re halfway there in our household, but my Mom, Julie, says she will never forget the day when bottles and diapers were a thing of the past. What an explosion of savings in the family budget!

2. Freedom from Sleepless Nights

This is one I never thought would come, especially with my younger child who I had rocked back to sleep for a little too long for fear she would keep the rest of the household awake in the middle of the night.

(In retrospect? It probably would have been fine to let her figure it out earlier. But when you’re sleep-deprived you’re not thinking clearly in the first place, so…)

I’ve been warned that the sleepless night phase may return in about 14 years, staying up late to make sure the kids are in for curfew.

3. Freedom from Stepping on a Lego

A parade of toys in the living room, the kitchen, the hallway, the bathroom. Then one day? It’s all in his room — don’t let my sister get my spaceship. Now keeping his room clean? That’s another thing entirely. But at least my stairs aren’t booby-trapped with Lego.

4. Freedom from Swim Floats

Oh, that glorious summer, that first summer of pool freedom where your child has learned how to swim well enough that it’s okay to forget the puddle jumper at home. Because a pool outing where there’s one less thing to remember is a welcomed thing indeed!

5. Freedom from Being Homework Helper

When kids are first starting out with it, a little guidance on the homework front is probably a good thing. Helping model to them how to check for mistakes and all that — but when they get older, it’s time to pass the torch. And you know what that means, right? No more pretending you know what you’re talking about with that assignment.

Let’s all breathe a collective sigh of relief.

6. Freedom from Being Chauffeur

“I wish I were in the car pool line at school,” said no Mom ever. We know what’s up. While it’s pretty scary to release your teen driver on the road for the first (or second or third…) time, we all know you have more things to do than hours in the day. And that time you’re NOT spending waiting on football practice to end? Party time.

Have you already achieved these milestones? Pat yourself on the back! You are watching your kids mature before your very eyes — and doing it so well, I might add. I’m lighting a sparkler in honor of you this Independence Day.

Are you still in the trenches? Me, too! Fist bump. I’ve only seen some of these freedoms so far, but my Mother tells me they’re fabulous. So let’s hang in there, soldier! Your celebration day — and mine — is coming!

Talk to me in the comment section! I’d love to have a “grown up” conversation. You know, one with real words.

  1. Aubrey….you are so clever. 🙂 But…I do wonder if any house that had Lego’s in it could ever be free from stepping on those mean little objects! 😉

Thanks so much for linking up your Mommy Merit Badges at Project Inspire{d}!

Thanks for your kind words, Diane! As I went to kiss my son goodnight last night, I found a neat little path carved in his Legos from his door to his bed. And literally the rest of the rug was covered in them! I am so thankful for times like those when my husband thought to save my bare feet. (Because we all know it was not the 4-year-old who cleaned a path. Yet? Haha.)

  2. Thanks Audrey for stopping by, I’ll except these cute badges, even if I dont have little kids I sure went through all these. Im going to share them on G+ since I dont have little ones around and glad there are no more bitsy legos to step on!!!
